Mark Twain, who lived in Muscatine in 1854, once wrote:
"I remember Muscatine for its summer sunsets.
I have never seen any on either side of the ocean that equaled them."

Muscatine Map

From Mark Twain to Muscatine Melons, our city has a long and proud history of supporting agriculture and innovative technology. Located at the bend of the Mississippi River in Iowa, Muscatine is said to have gotten its name from the Mascoutin Indians who lived in this area in the 18th century. Whatever its origin, Muscatine is a unique name not shared with any other city in the world.

Muscatine, and the surrounding county, (pop: 40,000) has a large agricultural community and a strong industrial base. It is home to the world headquarters of two Fortune 500 companies - HON Industries and Bandag, Inc. The city is just 15 miles south of Interstate 80 and in close proximity to major business hubs such as the Quad Cities, Des Moines, Chicago and St. Louis.

The Mississippi River is a very important part of life in eastern Iowa. The River not only provides a scenic drive along Hwy. 61, but is a method of industrial transportation and a source of numerous recreational opportunities. Our section of the Mississippi River is also the nesting and hunting grounds of the American Bald Eagle.
